Wie der Miami Herald in seiner heutigen Ausgabe schreibt, überlegt die National Oceanic and Atmospheric Association (NOAA) den Beginn der Hurrikansaison in diesem Jahr bereits am kommenden Montag, den 03. April zu erklären.
"Max Mayfield, head of the Tropical Prediction Center in Miami, FL said on Friday: “We are in a very active period of Atlantic Hurricane apperance. During the last two years we saw 70 percent more tropical storms as in average seasons. This trend will not end shortly. Research and recent observations are hinting at a high possibility for a very early system this year.”"
Die Wissenschafler haben sogar schon ein verdächtiges Gebiet im Auge, in dem in Kürze eine Entwicklung geschehen könnte. Max Mayfield: „There is a pocket of warm water in the atlantic and atmospheric conditions seem to be favorable for tropical storm developement. We could se a storm or possibly a hurricane during the next days.”
Tatsächlich hat sich mitten im Atlantik ein Tiefdruckgebiet gebildet und läßt bereits erste charakteristische Anzeichen von Organisation erkennen. Hier ist das aktuelle Satellitenbild:
Ein tropisches System Anfang April ist schon eine ziemliche Sensation. Doch es kommt noch besser:
„This early in the year the jet stream is at another position than during the usual hurricane season months. Steering currents should drive a possible developing system heading to the south. This could bring the system near the equator in a few days. When crossing the equator the coriolis force will reverse and slow down the counter clockwise spin of the hurricane.” Das Team des TPC rechnet also mit einem bisher noch nie beobachteten Phänomen, wenn ein Hurrikan bei der Überquerung des Äquators versucht seine Drehbewegung zu wechseln:
„We have no idea what will happen in such a case. Perhaps the system comes to a full stop. But there are also other possibilities, the storm could be trapped at the equator and not have the ability to go back to the northern or forward into the southern hemisphere. We have commisioned the hurricane hunters to fly missions into the system when it comes to this scenario.”
